Hey dads – did you know physical activity can improve brain health, reduce your risk of developing diabetes and heart disease, and strengthen bones and muscles? If you engage in at least 30-60 minutes a day of moderate physical activity and then add two days of strength training exercises, you will see significant improvements in both your physical and mental health.

To raise the physical, mental, social, and spiritual health of American Indians and Alaska Natives to the highest level.
About us
The Indian Health Service, an agency within the US Department of Health and Human Services, works to ensure that all American Indian and Alaska Native people receive comprehensive health care services and all Indian health facilities are staffed with well-trained, compassionate, committed health care professionals. IHS offers extraordinary career opportunities that provide comprehensive, patient-centered care in a variety of disciplines and health care facility settings. An Indian health career offers dedicated practitioners a chance to live and work within Native communities, providing a unique opportunity to learn about the heritage of the Tribe, discover the traditions that have been handed down for generations and gain cultural insight into Native beliefs and values. IHS is hiring physicians, pharmacists, dentists, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, behavioral health providers and other health professionals. We offer a choice of three options for health professionals to practice their specific discipline: working as a federal civil service employee, as an Officer in the Commissioned Corps of the US Public Health Service (USPHS) or directly for a Tribal or Urban Indian program. Each career option offers career flexibility, competitive salaries and benefits and ample opportunity for advancement. Applicants must be US citizens. IHS also provides for the education, recruitment and retention of health care professionals through the IHS Scholarship Program, the IHS Extern Program and the IHS Loan Repayment Program. IHS has openings available nationwide right now. The policy of the IHS is to provide absolute preference to qualified Indian applicants and employees who are suitable for federal employment in filling vacancies within the IHS. IHS is an equal opportunity employer. Privacy Policy: https://www.ihs.gov/privacypolicy/

Elders in American Indian and Alaska Native communities are sources of great wisdom and strength. Yet, many of our elders suffer from abuse and neglect. In fact, nearly one in three Native elders have reported experiencing abuse or neglect in the past year alone—double the rate of the general population. Loss of traditional lifestyles, economic hardships, and social isolation are just some of the factors contributing to this alarming statistic. Visit https://bit.ly/3KGPFWD to read how IHS Forensic Nurse Consultant Nicole Stahlmann suggests we counter these issues and take concrete steps to protect our elders. Join us in standing against elder abuse! #WEAAD

It’s National Men’s Health Week, and we would like to honor and thank our grandfathers, fathers, uncles, brothers, sons, nephews, and grandsons. Our men are powerful and resilient and play an integral role in the overall health and well-being of our tribal communities. Too often, they don’t take the time to worry about their own health. Let’s honor our men by saying thank you for taking care of us; now, please take the time to take care of yourself! Make an appointment with your provider to discuss your health today. #NMHW #MensHealthMonth

Many people think dementia is just a normal part of aging – but it’s not. Lifestyle choices and behaviors can influence the chances of developing Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Many of these factors are linked to heart health and other chronic conditions, including high blood pressure, lack of physical activity, being overweight, diabetes, depression, smoking, hearing impairment, and excessive alcohol consumption. Most of these risk factors occur more often in American Indian and Alaska Native populations. It's never too late to learn how to break old habits and embrace new ones! Adopting healthier habits now may help you lower the risk of dementia or delay its progression. Check out this list of healthy habits from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and learn more about reducing your risks: bit.ly/44Whi7c. Together, let's #ENDALZ!

Yesterday, the U.S. Supreme Court released a decision that requires the Indian Health Services to pay contract support costs on portions of Tribal health programs funded with third-party revenue, such as Medicare and Medicaid expenditures. The IHS has been preparing for this possibility in order to ensure the transition to new CSC-related systems will cause minimal disruption to those we serve. The agency remains firmly committed to executing our obligations under federal law and supporting tribal self-determination and sovereignty. In response to the Court’s decision, see Secretary Becerra’s statement: https://lnkd.in/eTv2bT83 Read more in a statement from IHS Director Roselyn Tso: https://lnkd.in/ev4jfUXX
