He joined ASPR formally in 2019 but deployed with ASPR for many years before that as an Agency Representative. “To me, AANHPI month is a way to highlight what Asian American, Native Hawaiian Pacific Islanders contribute to our broader community. It’s amazing because where I live and manage AANHPI are so well represented in all areas of my life: leadership roles, positions of influence, business, artists, all of it. End of

So, to me it’s just a nice way to showcase to a larger audience what I get to celebrate and experience every day. It’s meaningful to me as a ‘minority’ representative to see people who fit my archetype doing amazing things. The message for impressionable people and younger generations to witness this is amazing, shows them that there is a place for them in these roles. Lastly, I’m so stoked to be asked to do this and give an ASPR voice to Asian Pacific Islanders in our organization and be able to spread the Aloha to all of you!” Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander #AANHPI Heritage Month provides an opportunity to honor and celebrate the rich tapestry of cultures, histories, and contributions of AANHPI people and communities. In that spirit, during AANHPI Heritage Month, we are highlighting a few members of #TeamASPR as they reflect on what this month means to them. • “The National Disaster Medical System has been answering the call to serve in communities nationwide since 1989, when we first deployed in response to Hurricane Hugo. For 35 years, we have served communities across America and we must continue to be ready to respond, no matter what lies ahead. Natural disasters have become more frequent, extensive, and lethal. Man-made threats are becoming more dangerous, putting national health security at risk. But we are training to ensure NDMS is ready to respond – no matter what lies ahead. At this week’s #NDMSTrainingSummit, our responders are learning to set up a Base of Operations, prepare for deployment, use specialized equipment, and more. They are gaining insight on challenges and solutions from previous disaster response operations, improving their understanding of behavioral health issues, and learning to use new tools like telemedicine to improve disaster response. This week’s training is equipping our responders with the skills they need to truly be ready to respond.” – Helga Scharf-Bell, Director of the National Disaster Medical System
