NIH will be hosting an informational webinar about its recent request for information (RFI) and draft proposal to incorporate patient access planning in the commercialization process for NIH-owned inventions. The webinar will take place on Monday, June 11, 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm ET. Presenters will provide background on NIH’s Intramural Research Program, discuss patent licensing at NIH, review the concept of access planning, and discuss the RFI and draft policy proposal. The Federal Laboratory Consortium has released a new podcast episode discussing one of the many ways the FLC provides value for federal labs and their business partners and collaborators. This is the second year that the NIH Technology Transfer program has attended BIO with the FLC. NIH is committed to improving the health of all Americans. To this end, NIH has issued a draft policy proposal to improve access to medical products developed from NIH-owned inventions. The proposed policy would apply to NIH-owned inventions that result from research conducted by NIH’s own scientists within its Intramural Research Program. We are seeking input from the public on the proposal and the potential license agreement language. Deadline for input is on 7/22/24. https://go.nih.gov/rAdwXCV

Three NIH Technology Transfer experts will be speaking at the Biotechnology Innovation Organization 2024 International Convention taking place in San Diego June 3-6, 2024 . Tara Kirby, Director of the NIH Office of Technology Transfer will be participating in the In and Out of This World: Partnering with Federal Labs panel. Michael Salgaller, Unit Supervisor of the Technology Analysis and Marketing Unit of the NCI Technology Transfer Center will be moderating a panel that will leverage the learnings and outcomes of the NIH Public Health and Economic Impact Study to discuss how partners are Achieving Commercial Success Through the National Institutes of Health’s Intramural Research Program. Steven Ferguson, Special Advisor at the NIH Office of Technology Transfer will again be part of the faculty for the BIO Professional Development Course - Become a Biotech or MedTech Entrepreneur. Antibodies for a therapeutic to prevent hereditary hearing loss are available for licensing from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. The transmembrane channel-like gene 1 (TMC1) protein is required for the transduction of sound into electrical impulses in inner ear sensory cells. Mutations to TMC1 is one of the common causes hereditary hearing loss. Inventors at NIDCD developed antibodies that specifically bind to the TMC1 protein as a treatment for hearing loss.
