Strengthening the public health response to human trafficking
About us
The Office on Trafficking in Persons (OTIP) develops anti-trafficking strategies, policies, and programs to prevent human trafficking, build the capacity of health and human services to respond to human trafficking, increase identification of victims and access to services, and strengthen health and well-being outcomes for survivors of human trafficking. We have three major functions: Protection: We fund victim identification and assistance programs and determine eligibility for services for certain victims of human trafficking. Prevention: We partner with government, non-government, and private organizations to raise public awareness, provide training and technical assistance, build capacity, and identify opportunities to prevent human trafficking. Research and Policy: We collaborate with government and non-government agencies to evaluate anti-trafficking programs, streamline data collection, identify research priorities, and inform anti-trafficking policies.

On this #WorldDayAgainstChildLabor, we reflect on the 3.3 million children who experience forced labor every year around the world. We must work together to address the root causes that create risks and to strengthen protection factors at individual, family, community, and societal levels. Work affects both our physical and mental well-being—in good ways and bad. These impacts can be felt even more intensely by workers in helping professions—particularly those who are regularly exposed to the effects of secondary trauma. In this webinar, the OTIP and the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General will explore how we can together reimagine workplaces that are engines of well-being. We’ll discuss practical strategies to implement the five essentials of workplace mental health and well-being outlined in the Surgeon General’s Framework for Workplace Mental Health and Well-Being. We will also hear from organizations working to address human trafficking and other forms of violence that have implemented well-being programs for their staff.
