Welcome to May! Mental Health Awareness month and today is Maternal Mental Health Day. Maternal mental health is crucial not only for the well-being of the mother but also for the healthy development of the child and the harmony of the family unit. It's a complex issue that requires support from healthcare systems, communities, and individuals alike. Raising awareness about maternal mental health helps reduce stigma and encourages women to seek the support and care they need to be during and after pregnancy. It's a reminder that mental health is an integral part of overall health and deserves attention and resources. #mentalhealthawarenessmonth #Weare1in5 #maternalmentalhealthmatters

Like and repost to learn more about maternal and child health problems & solutions! 1 in 8 women experience symptoms of postpartum depression (#PDD) within one year of giving birth. While life with a new baby can be thrilling and rewarding, it can also be hard and stressful at times. PDD is characterized by feelings of sadness, despair, anxiety, fear and irritability, and may interfere with daily life. Mental/emotional support from friends and family, counseling or therapy, and medications can help women overcome PDD. But it is also very important to normalize this condition in society and bring #awareness of the high prevalence, as many #women feel very alone during this time. Also, anyone can call or text the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline at 1-833-852-6262 for free, confidential, 24/7 mental health support for moms and their families before, during, and after pregnancy! This week it's Infant Mental Health Awareness Week, which highlights the importance of babies' emotional wellbeing and development. Research shows that the experiences and relationships we have in the earliest years of our lives, including before birth, impact on the development of our brains. Stress and adversity experienced during pregnancy can have a negative impact on babies' physical and mental health as they grow, but this doesn't have to be the case. The services in place to support mothers, birthing people, partners and families in pregnancy can make a huge difference. Queensland Health's Child and Baby health clinics are a great place for support: https://hubs.ly/Q01Ts8Pf0 Source: Flourish Australia https://hubs.ly/Q01Ts7X60 Source: Australian Association for Infant Mental Health https://hubs.ly/Q01Ts6HK0 Source: The Association for Infant Mental Health - AiMH UK https://hubs.ly/Q01Ts4nP0 Source: Nemours Kids Health https://hubs.ly/Q01Ts9yV0

Though I didn't recognize it at the time, anxiety was an ever present part of my pregnancy and postpartum. A family history of unexplained stillbirths was in the back of my mind much of my pregnancy, which meant anytime my baby wasn't active I was feeling some level of nervousness. Even after a safe delivery I felt worried, and frequently found myself hurrying down the hall or pulling over on the side of the road, sick with the sudden fear that my baby wasn't breathing. I would learn to tell myself that he had been breathing the 100 times I had checked before. I was fortunate that this anxiety was not more severe. But looking back I can see that it affected me more than I realized. I didn't have the vocabulary to describe it. I didn't hear people talking about postpartum anxiety, despite research showing that up to 1 in 5 birthing people will experience symptoms of anxiety in the peripartum period. As we wrap Mental Health Awareness month, please take a moment to hear our brilliant team member Lita Simanis share her experience with postpartum anxiety which ultimately led to a career as a perinatal mental health provider. We are proud to have Lita as a part of the Partum Health team supporting expecting and postpartum families as they navigate the mental and emotional transitions of new parenthood. Though May is officially over, we will continue sharing stories from our perinatal mental health campaign, filmed in partnership with Ariana Vargas and STIGMA. We need to hear these stories to normalize mental health struggles and improve support in the fertility, pregnancy, and postpartum journey. #maternalmentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #socialworker #familyhealth #workingparents #perinatalmentalhealth
Empathy is essential in healthcare. For many of us working in the field, our empathy stems from personal experience - whether navigating our own health or the health of a loved one. This is certainly true for Lita Simanis, who found herself experiencing postpartum anxiety as a new parent. Her path not only led to surviving and recovering, but also to a career in perinatal mental health. She now helps so many who unexpectedly find themselves navigating new and uncertain emotions leading up to and following childbirth - just as she did. Lita is an amazing clinician and colleague who we are proud to work with here at Partum Health. Lita, thank you for sharing your story, for opening up the conversation about common challenges like intrusive thoughts without judgment, and for your dedication to helping parents. This story was filmed in partnership with STIGMA and Ariana Vargas in honor of Maternal Mental Health awareness month. Though this month technically ends today, we will continue sharing stories and shining a light on these incredibly honest accounts from individuals navigating mental health through fertility, pregnancy, and postpartum. #maternalmentalhealth #mentalhealthawarenessmonth #womenshealth #digitalhealth
