Today, May 28, is the International Day of Action for Women's Health. This day is a time to raise awareness about the health and rights of women and girls around the world. Women's health is a human right. Every woman has the right to access quality health care, including sexual and reproductive health care. However, many women around the world do not have access to the health care they need. Here are some ways you can take action: 1. Learn about the health and rights of women and girls. 2. Talk to your friends and family about women's health. 3. Support organizations that are working to improve women's health. 4. Contact your elected officials and demand that they support policies that improve women's health. We call on women to take control of their own health. Learn about your body and your health rights. New publication alert! IIGH Research Director Laura Ferguson, IIGH Research Program Specialist Michelle Anderson, IIGH Director Sofia Gruskin, and other USC-based co-authors, have just published “The Ubiquity of ‘Self-Care’ in Health: Why Specificity Matters” in the journal Global Public Health. These days, it feels like everyone is talking about self-care. This study examines over 90 definitions of self-care extending beyond the sexual and reproductive health domain, to understand how definitions vary and why a shared understanding might be valuable for advancing self-care in health policy, programs and services. The authors propose a multilevel conceptualization, viewing self-care as integral to health on individual, interpersonal, and institutional levels, uniquely impacting diverse health fields and contexts. This adaptable framework can contribute to improved health and well-being while recognizing the connection between self-care, healthcare and health-related human rights. Day 4 of National Women's Health Week focuses on Reducing Stigma! Women’s health topics, including periods (menstruation), eating disorders, gender-based violence, and reproductive health conditions, often carry a stigma, and many do not feel comfortable talking about these important issues.
