We are dedicated to hearing from community members in the most accessible way possible for them-- whether that's through in-person interactions, though choosing facilitators who understand and resonate with their dynamics, or even embracing the virtual realm with tools like Zoom 👩💻 . Every detail is thoughtfully considered, from settings to nuances, to foster a genuine exchange of insights. However, some bridges require extra care. In our work it can sometimes be more difficult to engage the Amish/Mennonite communities that stem from their culture and practices. From limited internet and phone access to a preference for informal conversations over structured focus groups, our commitment to preserving their distinct identity is evident. One of our clients identified early on that there is an Amish/Mennonite community that was a sub-population of residents in their community that they wanted to understand a little bit more. Our client wanted to be able to assess how they could serve this unique community better to improve the health of the community members 👥 . So, when we found out that there is an Amish Health and Safety Day being held at an Amish farm, we jumped on the chance to explore this community more. We inquired if we could attended, and were welcomed with open-arms. We have a wonderful experience, even if we did have to navigate a bit of uncharted territory. Adapting our approach is crucial, as our questions needed to be sensitive to their values and culture. End of
Translation Yet, conversations flowed organically, gently shaped by mutual respect. 👋 Our purpose extended beyond gathering data; it was about fostering understanding. It reminded us of why community public health is such a wonderful field and why our work is important. Our hope is that the experience was not just magical for us but that the information we collected can help our client serve the Amish/Mennonite community better than they did before and enhance the support they are able to give to these members of the community. 🫶 Stephanie MoxleyTo view or add a comment, sign in

#NACAP2023 Take 4 minutes to watch what "Splendid Land" could look like for us! Thank you Community Catalysts CIC Uk for reminding us of the possibilities of looking to each other and our communities to enable us to live well. In Australia, as we await the implementation of the 2021 Aged Care Royal Commission, the outcomes of the newly announced #taskforce and discuss #proportionalrisk, people require support to live well now. Let's use the #abundance of communities and #circlesofsupport to scaffold aged care and disability services. "Seen from the point of view of the people or families with cause to draw on support this is not a matter of ‘vacancies’ or ‘workforce’, it’s about the availability of the things you need to live safe and well in the place you call home, doing the things that matter to you, in communities where we look out for one another. And while for some people, that may include workers trained to administer medication, to be able to ‘lift and handle’, or to carry out ‘intimate personal care’, for a great many others, it’s a whole range of other support, connections, opportunities, devices, technology, help around the home and getting about" . "Social services spend a huge amount of time and effort trying to stop me having what I didn’t want anyway!" https://lnkd.in/get3r-GM - The often narrow definition of 'social care' restricts it to 'time & task' & 'personal care' creating a perception that available support is limited. People say there is a deficit but we often see abundance. Our angela catley's new blog and video explores the idea of abundance and deficit through Mavis and Meena who live in Splendid and Typical land: https://lnkd.in/get3r-GM You might like this Martin Routledge Neil Crowther Institute for Research on Innovation and Services for Development (IRISS) - CNR Think Local Act Personal (TLAP) Coalition for Personalised Care Improving Adult Care Together (IMPACT) Clenton Farquharson MBE Dee Fraser Thanks for bringing Mavis and Meena to life with your video skills too Sharon Wilton🤩

BETTER HEALTH VIA COMMUNITY LISTENING ****Mar 11, 2023 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am**** by Qualtrics Community engagement harnesses the skills and talents of its most valuable resource, the people. But we’ve all experienced programs and policies designed by people too far removed from the problem – they simply don’t work. Involving community members in social, policy, and health initiatives can foster trust, elevate program reach, and provide insight into social determinants that perpetuate generational inequities. Active listening to those impacted by policy decisions removes the guesswork. Bringing lived experiences to the conversation opens the possibility to practical solutions. Join the discussion led by people who have lived the experience, are in the position to make change, and have not lost sight of the value of the voice of the community to impact change. The phrase "accessibility is a journey" is one that you have probably come across before, it's often spoken at conferences, presentations, meetings with stakeholders, and it's probably on a really cool sticker somewhere too. We'd like to level up that phrase and say "Accessibility is a community journey". Why? The quality of access is the sum of its parts. This means that accessibility is created by the community that goes into it. This can be both a relief and a challenge: - the relief (you don't have to do this by yourself) - the challenge (where do you start in building your community?) Both of these parts help to form the journey. At Modality Co, we're here to help you with all three: the accessibility, the community, and the journey. We're really excited that later this week we will be announcing our first community events based in lutruwita/Tasmania, this could be your first step in forming your accessibility community.
