ONC Celebrates 20 Years! As we celebrate the 20-year anniversary of ONC, we are grateful for the opportunity to continue serving every American as we reflect on where we began. ONC was created by Executive Order in April of 2004, when health care was primarily dependent on paper-based records and processes. Since our inception, we have watched health care transform significantly with the adoption of EHRs, the launch of the Health IT Certification program, and multiple policies that continue to propel information access and innovation in health IT. We are excited to see what lies ahead in the next 20 years. What has been your favorite part of this journey with ONC? See our full history: HealthIT.gov/20years #ONC20 #HealthIT
I would say the adoption of FHIR based integration is transforming the lives of providers to be able to access relevant data through open APIs and for patients to have access to their data no matter where they live is not available 15 years ago. We have come along way! Seeing it from the lense of patient engagement, HIE integrations, data migrations and archiving and now telehealth and individual access has taught me a lot and shows that we are progressing forward.

1moOn April 27, 2004, President Bush signed Executive Order (EO) 13335 and created the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC). Like tapping that first domino, this single action is a key moment in United States health IT history.
