The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published three new HIV surveillance reports highlighting trends from 2018-2022. Key findings include a 12% decrease in new HIV infections, significant reductions among young people and in the South, and progress in HIV awareness. The reports emphasize the need to address health inequities and expand HIV testing, PrEP, and treatment efforts to achieve national HIV prevention goals. Office of Infectious Disease and HIV/AIDS Policy (OIDP) is currently accepting applications for two fellowship opportunities to focus on STIs, HIV research, AHEAD, and social determinants of health. Applications will be accepted through July 5, 2024 and application review will start the week of June 10. Early submission is encouraged, with a possible start date in July. CDC released theme for National HIV Testing Day on June 27. The 2024 theme, “Level up your self-love: check your status,” encourages self-respect and health awareness. As part of the Ending the HIV Epidemic in the U.S. initiative, the 57 prioritized jurisdictions are undertaking innovative approaches under the initiative’s Prevent pillar. As the initiative begins its fifth year, members of OIDP’s EHE and Engagement Teams recently visited several jurisdictions to learn more. The Office of Infectious Disease and HIV/AIDS Policy (OIDP) is located in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (ASH), Office of the Secretary (OS), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Our mission is to provide strategic leadership and management, while encouraging collaboration, coordination, and innovation among federal agencies and stakeholders to reduce the burden of infectious diseases. OIDP works with federal and non-federal stakeholders to develop, coordinate, and implement national strategies and initiatives to prevent infectious diseases. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released a fact sheet on potential Medicare Part B coverage for HIV PrEP, encouraging pharmacies and providers to prepare for a possible National Coverage Determination (NCD). This would eliminate cost-sharing for PrEP, currently covered under Medicare Part D. The proposed NCD includes oral and injectable PrEP, counseling, and screenings. A study titled, “A Randomized, Placebo-Controlled, Double-Blinded Trial of the Safety and Efficacy of Tecovirimat for the Treatment of Human Mpox Virus Disease,” or STOMP trial is evaluating the antiviral drug tecovirimat (TPOXX) as a treatment for mpox. Learn how individuals, providers, and community organizations can get involved. The 80th Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (PACHA) meeting in Houston, Texas, took place March 27-28, 2024. The council engaged with community members, visited local organizations, and discussed HIV policy. Panels focused on statewide perspectives, minority communities, and urban/rural challenges.
