Imagine scoring a point in a big game or getting applause for reciting your poem or being a hero to someone you love. The admiration of others feels good because it stimulates serotonin. You tell yourself you shouldn't care about such things, but the longing for serotonin is natural. Serotonin is not aggression - it's calm confidence in your own strength. It's your brain's signal that you can safely meet your needs in a world full of rivals. In the animal world, social recognition promotes survival. When a critter gains a one-up position it helps spread their genes. So natural selection built a brain that rewards you with a good feeling when you gain a one-up position. You can see that others like to be in the position of strength, though you hate to see this in yourself.
