Each year more than 40,000 older people in NSW are hospitalised because of a fall at home or in the community. With an ageing population, this could exceed more than 60,000 hospitalisations and $1.09 billion in healthcare costs by 2041. While it’s individuals and the health system who are wearing much of the burden of falls – it is a whole of community approach that is required to stop the rising number of falls and keep our ageing population safe. The Clinical Excellence Commission’s white paper on Fall Prevention in NSW calls for a co-ordinated approach to reducing falls. Prior authorization requirements often times delay care to the detriment of patient care in both Medicare advantage and other plans. Moreover, even with prior authorization both Medicare advantage and other private pair of plans frequently still seek to reconsider, approvals and challenge coverage relied on both providers and patients after the delivery of care.
