TranslationNIH researchers have discovered that the presence of a benign nail abnormality, onychopapilloma, may lead to the diagnosis of a rare inherited disorder that increases the risk of developing cancerous tumors of the skin, eyes, kidneys and the tissue that lines the chest and abdomen. Among study participants with known BAP1 tumor predisposition syndrome aged 30 and older, 88% had onychopapilloma tumors affect multiple nails. The researchers suggest that nail screening may be particularly valuable in a patient with a personal or family history of melanoma or other potential BAP1-associated malignancy. https://bit.ly/4avHSp5 #CancerResearch #onychopapilloma #science #research #NIH

A new NIH study of prion diseases, using a human cerebral organoid model, suggests there is a substantial species barrier preventing transmission of chronic wasting disease from cervids—deer, elk and moose—to people. Prion diseases are degenerative diseases found in some mammals and primarily involve deterioration of the brain but also can affect the eyes and other organs. Currently, there are no preventive or therapeutic treatments for prion diseases. https://bit.ly/3wvwU55 #ChronicWastingDisease #research #science #NIH

Yesterday, NIH hosted its annual Police Day event on the Bethesda campus. It gives NIHers the opportunity to connect with and honor our local police officers for their service to the NIH community. One of the activities was a demonstration by the NIH Police Canine Unit. Human and canine officers in the Unit are responsible for searching for explosives and firearms at campus entry points and on campus, responding to calls for suspicious packages, and area sweeps before special events. They keep us safe and we are grateful to them for their service to our community! #PoliceDay #CanineUnite #NIH
