Great to be at this year’s Emids Healthcare Summit. Stuart Baker MD hosted a panel on value-based care, and we were honored to be sharing the stage with Tufts Medicine CEO Michael Dandorph, Blue Shield of CA’s Health Transformation SVP Krishna Ramachandran, and Equality Health’s CEO Hugh Lytle. They talked about VBC not being an organizational side hustle, how partnering can increase reliability and speed up progress, and how to create trust between payers and providers. But I think Michael Dandorph said it perfectly: "We've been putting more and more rocks in the backpacks of our physicians, our care teams. And we have to figure out ways that we can actually simplify that...and return to the joy of practicing medicine." #valuebasedcare#populationhealth#healthcaretransformation#EmidsHCSummit
I consider my colleague Julia Ivanova, PhD to be one of the few public health experts who can explain concepts in non-technical terminology. And because of that, her explanation of findings from the 2024 Arizona Rural and Public Health Policy is fascinating.
In her explanation, she discusses how public health leaders are employing various individualized strategies to address the acute problems that hinder rural communities' access to healthcare. These strategies often cater to the unique challenges faced by rural areas, including geographical isolation, limited healthcare infrastructure, and workforce shortages.
Some of those approaches include:
-Telehealth Expansion projects including Mobile Health Clinics
-Recruitment and Retention of Healthcare Professionals
-Training and using more Community Health Workers who understand local cultures and languages
-Forming more partnerships with local organizations, schools, businesses and health systems
-Advocating for policies that improve rural healthcare infrastructure, increase funding, and support innovative care models
-Tailoring education programs to address specific health issues prevalent in rural areas
-Investing in healthcare facilities, technology, and broadband internet for telehealth services.
-Implementing care models like Patient-Centered Medical Homes (PCMH) and Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs)
The ultimate goal of the conference was to show that these strategies require a deep understanding of the specific needs and resources of rural communities. But with research like Julia's, the ball is pushed one step closer toward implementing solutions that can significantly impact the health and wellbeing of rural populations.

The 2024 Arizona Rural & Public Health Policy Forum was an excellent way to gain insight into Arizona's regulatory and policy updates for the new year. Understanding a state's acute and chronic needs in its healthcare system helps the community plan and focus more effectively.
We heard updates from the Governor's health policy advisor, the directors of AHCCCS and ADHS, experts from the Arizona Telemedicine Program, and many more.
One key takeaway from the forum is that while we have long-term goals--such as increasing Accountability/Trust and growing the Workforce--our public health leaders are also using individualized strategies every day to deal with the acute problems that face rural communities' abilities to access healthcare.
