While life with a new baby can be thrilling and rewarding, it also can be hard and stressful at times. Black Mothers are at a higher risk for perinatal and postnatal mood disorders like depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Health inequities result in these patients consistently receiving lower quality care than the rest of the population. That’s why it’s so important to find support during pregnancy and to seek help and care when needed. Though I didn't recognize it at the time, anxiety was an ever present part of my pregnancy and postpartum. A family history of unexplained stillbirths was in the back of my mind much of my pregnancy, which meant anytime my baby wasn't active I was feeling some level of nervousness. Even after a safe delivery I felt worried, and frequently found myself hurrying down the hall or pulling over on the side of the road, sick with the sudden fear that my baby wasn't breathing. I would learn to tell myself that he had been breathing the 100 times I had checked before. I was fortunate that this anxiety was not more severe. But looking back I can see that it affected me more than I realized. I didn't have the vocabulary to describe it. I didn't hear people talking about postpartum anxiety, despite research showing that up to 1 in 5 birthing people will experience symptoms of anxiety in the peripartum period. As we wrap Mental Health Awareness month, please take a moment to hear our brilliant team member Lita Simanis share her experience with postpartum anxiety which ultimately led to a career as a perinatal mental health provider. We are proud to have Lita as a part of the Partum Health team supporting expecting and postpartum families as they navigate the mental and emotional transitions of new parenthood. Though May is officially over, we will continue sharing stories from our perinatal mental health campaign, filmed in partnership with Ariana Vargas and STIGMA. Empathy is essential in healthcare. For many of us working in the field, our empathy stems from personal experience - whether navigating our own health or the health of a loved one. This is certainly true for Lita Simanis, who found herself experiencing postpartum anxiety as a new parent. Her path not only led to surviving and recovering, but also to a career in perinatal mental health. She now helps so many who unexpectedly find themselves navigating new and uncertain emotions leading up to and following childbirth - just as she did. Lita is an amazing clinician and colleague who we are proud to work with here at Partum Health. Lita, thank you for sharing your story, for opening up the conversation about common challenges like intrusive thoughts without judgment, and for your dedication to helping parents.
